Built an interactive AR museum experience
The sandbox is an interactive AR museum experience that supports co-creation.
My role
Challenge
More and more museums are beginning to realize the potential of interactive art exhibitions and are experimenting with technology. The purpose of this project was to explore how augmented reality (AR) can be used as an element of interactivity to spark creativity and position the visitor as an active co-creator rather than a passive observer.
Process
The design process has been iterative and consisted of a long phase of contextual exploration, prototyping and a workshop with a method called "bodystorming" in order to test the prototype and its intended context.
Solution
We created an interactive AR artifact that is not screen-based. The user instead interacts with the sand, whereupon a sensor senses the altitude levels created in the sand. The data from the sensor then informs a projector that projects different colors on the sand depending on the altitude levels. The sandbox gives the user the opportunity to explore their creativity by interacting with the sand, alone or together with others. The sandbox can thus be seen as a tool for creating.
